Bottom watering seedlings — the method that changes everything
In breve: Watering seedlings from above wets the leaves and promotes damping off. Placing the tray in water for 20–30 minutes provides moisture without risk — and roots that grow downward.
Bottom watering — a method for calm gardeners
A small seedling has a thin stem. Even a gentle stream from above can bend it or wash it out. Wet leaves in warmth = damping off.
How it works:
Tray or pot into a bowl with 2–3 cm of water. The growing medium absorbs water by capillary action for 20–30 minutes. You remove it — moist growing medium, dry leaves.
Advantages:
- Roots grow downward (seeking water) — stronger root system
- Dry leaves — fewer fungi
- Even moisture throughout the container
When to water: When the top layer (1–2 cm) is dried out. Overwatered seedlings fare worse than slightly dried ones.
Important: Use settled water at room temperature.
