Stakes and supports for vegetables — what needs what
In breve: Tomatoes, cucumbers, beans, peas — all need support. Proper support improves ventilation, makes harvesting easier and protects plants from breaking.
Stakes and supports — what for what
Indeterminate tomatoes (growing upward):
Stake or string to hook. Minimum 180 cm height.
Determinate tomatoes (bushy):
Tomato cage or stake 100–120 cm.
Cucumber:
Net or strings for vertical training. Vertical cucumber: better fruits, fewer diseases, easier harvest.
Pole beans:
Bamboo stakes 200–250 cm in tipi or row. 2 seeds per stake.
Peas:
Wire mesh or bamboo — peas climb by themselves.
How to secure:
Softly — string or raffia. Never wire. For tomatoes: under each fruit truss when it starts to weigh down.
Economic tip:
Bamboo 200 cm — a few zloty, lasts many seasons. Jute netting is biodegradable.
